Johnny Ray & the New York All- Stars “Walk Of Fame”

The music industry in 2007 has nothing to do with the way things were done over 30 years ago. Today the press is not the same and the commercial radio stations that at one supported local artists. Today we depend on non-commercial radio (who are the defenders of good music), the internet, some club DJ’s and word of mouth from one colleague to another.

With all this there exists a huge quantity of music, old and new, that deserves to succeed and the support of the industry of what we call today ‘underground’ music. Everyday a classic recording is being discovered that everyone will enjoy worldwide.

It is almost 40 years since the release in the market of an LP with poor distribution but is a classic that contains names that are today considered legends.

Conguero Johnny Zamot (today known as Johnny Ray from the school of La Playa Sextet, Randy Carlos, La Plata Sextette, Tito Puente) united a group of the best musicians of the moment to record this gem like it was done in those days in ‘live and color’ in the studio. That formula of recording all together at the same time is something that that you do not see today and the reason the music has lost that special chemistry.

The chemistry between the musicians in this recording is what you will like in this project that consists of Descarga Salsa Jazz. Here the best musicians in New York were invited to make this recording possible. The musical director was the masterful Charlie Palmieri and the production was by Mr. Johnny Zamot.

The stars included on the piano Eddie (Eddy) Martinez (who made a tremendous name for himself with Mongo Santamaria, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri and many more), on the bass Eddie ‘Gua Gua’ Rivera (part of probably the best band Larry Harlow had in the 70’s), on timbales Manny Corchado ( from the Joe Quijano school that can be heard as a soloist on the descargas), on the bongo Johnny ‘Dandy’ Rodriguez (whose blood comes from veteran Johnny ‘La Vaca” Rodriguez and was part of the Tito Puente Orchestra for many years), on the congas Johnny Zamot (band leader since the 60’s), on first trumpet Ray Maldonado (one of the primary trumpeters with The Alegre All-Stars, Hector Lavoe & La Playa Sextet that can also be heard as a soloist), second trumpet Roy Roman (Machito, Puente, the Palmieri’s), on the trombones Barry Rogers (the one all others study since his days with Eddie Palmieri’s La Perfecta), & Jose Meriño (considered one of the best from the Dominican Republic that has recorded various LP’s as a soloist directing his own band), on the baritone sax Mario Rivera (extraordinary musician who passed away recently and shared the stage with Puente, Palmieri, & Tito Rodriguez amongst others), on the flute and tenor sax Crispin Fernandez (who in the 80’s became the #1 merengue saxophonist on call for the best bands), and on the tres guitar Charlie Rodriguez (who in the 80’s would form his own conjunto with vocalist Ray Reyes).

In the chorus the standouts are Yayo ‘El Indio’ (Peguerro) and Adalberto Santiago that many know as the best at what they do.

These are the musicians that participated on the Salsa and descarga tracks along with Tito Jay who does a fine job as vocalist and Johnny “Pee Wee’ Fernandez (that stayed on for many years with Zamot, Sociedad 76 and Zamot’s other bands).

This recording was also made possible because they had the best engineer of the time in Mr.Vicente Cartagena.

The other part of this CD is a selection of Latin Jazz tracks (that today some also call Latin Soul) starting with the hit “Cat Fish Bag” with the musicians Victor Venegas on bass (from the school of Mongo Santamaria and most recently Zon De Barrio), Billy Cobham (Panamanian who recorded with the Fania All-Stars) on drums, the baritone saxophonist Shepp Pullman (who was a top player with Tito Puente and is a featured soloist), Tito Jay on the bongo, Johnny Zamot on the conga, another star on the Fania label (at that time) Felipe Yanes (Tito Rodriguez) on the keyboards, the trumpets of Manny Duran (a classic in the band of Noro Morales and ten years with Machito) & Victor Paz (musical director for Tito Rodriguez for many years), on the timbales & drums Paul ‘La Playa’ Alicea (La Playa Sextet) and for the first time on soprano sax Mr. Mario Rivera. On the trombone there was Barry Rogers with Ray Maldonado on trumpet and Jimmy Sabater (Joe Cuba Sextet) on chorus.

When you listen to this jam with its Latin Soul & Jazz the first comments you’ll have are the freshness of the recording (that has been maintained for so many years) with the feeling of today’s music while maintaining the nostalgia of yesterday.

This recording is presented today for first time on CD for the old and new fans (‘viejovenes’ as the slang goes) of great music that marked a historic moment in the era of the 70”s thanks to the vision of Johnny Zamot and his musical director Charlie Palmieri.
