YO SOY BOR1CUA, JOHNNY RAY SALSA CON CLASE LATEST RELÉASE IS A CHEERFUL TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT COMPOSERS AND CELEBRATED INTERPRETERS OF PUERTO RICO The Puerto Rican percussionist Johnny Ray entitles his latest Yo Soy Boricua, and, if anything, the ñame seems a bit too obvious. For more than two decades he has remained in the spotlight by shunning his musical image every few years, retreating oniy to reinvent himself and then returning anew, totally in tune with current trends. One thing remains always the same, his devotion to Puerto Rico and its music. Johnny Ray's long-standing admiration for the great Puerto Rican composers and interpreters has largely given way to an obsession with patriotism and personal pride, and his Yo Soy Boricua attests unequivocally to this fact. The álbum features 9 carefully selected songs and a remix, all with a central theme, Puerto Rico.

He pays cheerful tribute to his beloved idols and their classic works throughout the CD. Just listen to the opener, "Potpourri Puertorriqueño," which is in fact a medley induding "Lamento del Campesino," "Romance del Campesino" and Canción de la Serranía," the most popular songs penned by Roberto Colé. AIso included there are equally engaging versions of Rafael Hernández' "Preciosa," Bobby Capó's "Soñando con Puerto Rico," and Ángel Canales' "Lejos de Ti." Yo Soy Boricua required Johnny to fínd ways to maintain the originality of the chosen themes while impressing upon them the familiar Johnny Ray Salsa con Clase zeal. Needless to say, the quest was met head on by Johnny, who successfully managed to créate inspiring versions of the vintage classics. Sometimes the renditions are graceful and humorous, as in "Aunque me Llore" and "La Parranda" respectively, and in some instances they are deeply heartfeit as in "Lejos de Ti" and "Jibarito Mío." Above all, the modern arrangements impart a refreshing change and make the new versions highiy danceable. Yo Soy Boricua is an exuberant album where the stage is given alternatively over to the band and. most importantly, to José Dávila and Sammy González, the lead singers. They emerge in their own right, enhancing the band's performance; making theirs a handful of oíd favorites and giving the right touch to the tille track "Yo Soy Boricua," a Johnny Ray composition, offered in a salsa versión and an infectious hip-hop/reggae remix. Johnny Ray is far too proud of his heritage and far too respectful of his fans to try exploiting this kind of national sentimentalism.

The álbum is a sincere tribute to the music of his native Puerto Rico that he wants to share with friends and fans all over the worid. Listen to this exciting new disc and once you fínish, you will not be able to help but evoke images of a stage covered with the striped, single-star flag emblazoned with the words, "Yo Soy Boricua!"
